On reading Kripke et al

In one's primary school days he would not object to maths homework on the ground that doing it wouldn't solve the most fundamental problems. And as he grows up, he sees the value of the exercise. Doing it does no harm, so long as one knows that by computing "2+2" he is not addressing any real question, and that mathematics, as both the wise and the fools have it, is a very "impoverished understanding of Being" after all. But on the other hand the inability or reluctance to think clearly can be disastrous.
